Family Literacy Day® is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and held annually on January 27 to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.
Prairie Valley School Division continues to recognise Family Literacy Day as an importance day in our school calendar. Opportunities to connect our homes and schools to emphasise our partnership in developing literacy skills are valuable!
Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child's development, improving a child's literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well.
Barbara Reid, award-winning Canadian author and illustrator, is the Honourary Chair of Family Literacy Day! She is the author and illustrator of many acclaimed picture books, including The Party. She has a unique style of illustrating her books using modelling clay to design detailed pictures to accompany her stories.
Included in the package are a number of activities that Barbara Reid is recommending for families to engage in together, celebrating this year's theme of "Learn at Play Every day."
Ecole White City School is encouraging all of our families to get involved and "play to learn" together on January 27. Peruse the list of attached activities or make up your own to spend about fifteen minutes together as a family. Take a picture or draw your own to share how your family participated, then email it to the library at Library.White.City@pvsd.ca or bring it to school by February 3. Pictures will be displayed in the school to show off our families reading and playing together. All families who participate will also be entered into a draw to win some great prizes!
