Physical Education Program
The Ministry of Education has renewed the curriculum guidelines. The goal is help students achieve levels of fun, fitness and healthy active living, whereby they can continue to maintain and/or improve their overall health and well-being.
All LES students, on various levels, design and implement a fitness plan that they carry out on “core/cardio” day, which this year is on Day 6. This opportunity allows students to work at their own pace and at the same time following a self designed fitness plan. Various work-out videos are incorporated to help motivate students to improve their physical fitness. During the video sessions appropriate child suited activities in the P90X video are used for refined teaching of yoga, cardio and core workouts. Another video used is “Fit Kids”.
Other games and activities promote moderate to vigorous movement activity which helps to increase heart rate.
As stated in the curriculum, students will:
• Enjoy and engage in healthy levels of participation in movement activities to support lifelong active living in the context of self, family, and community (Active Living).
• Enhance quality of movement by understanding, developing, and transferring movement concepts, skills, tactics, and strategies to a wide variety of movement activities (Skillful Movement).
• Balance self through safe and respectful personal, social, cultural, and environmental interactions in a wide variety of movement activities (Relationships).
Overall, the goal is to teach students ways to lead active, healthy and enjoyable lives well into the future.
