Battle of the Books

April 11, 2013

Through a generous donation from EVRAZ, Prairie Valley School Division is excited to be hosting a new literacy initiative this spring, called Battle of the Books.

As part of our Battle of the Books, our school will receive copies of the 16 picture books that will be in the “battle”.  These books are all newly published and many have been considered for major book awards.  They have been divided into 4 categories.  For each of the first four weeks, 4 books in the category of the week will be shared with students, and they will vote at the end of the week for their favourite.

 April 8-12 - Week 1 – Friendship Books

April 15-19 - Week 2 – Bear Books

April 22-26 - Week 3 – LMNO Books (the letters of the alphabet represent the book titles)
April 29-May3 - Week 4 – Believe it or Not Books

The book in each category with the most division-wide votes will move on to the “semi-finals” in the 5th and 6th weeks.  The final face-off between the winners of those two weeks will be in week 7. Our Battle of the Books winner will be announced May 24th.
Students and families can participate in our Battle of the Books by completing short challenges each week, related to the theme. Every time a student completes a challenge, he or she will be entered into a draw to win one of the nominated books as a prize. Families can also visit our Battle of the Books page on our division website to check out book trailers and see other accompanying materials.
Participating schools have a chance to enter to win one of 5 grand prizes of $1000 in library resources or towards an author visit!  Schools will be creating a short video of a chant about why the students enjoyed the Battle of the Books.  Everyone who enters gets their school entered into the draw! Cheque presentations will be made at the end of the Battle of the Books!
We look forward to this engaging and fun reading initiative which promises to motivate our young readers in our school!
